Peplum tank tops are such a flattering piece to sew. They combine the ease of a top with the shape of a peplum. In this post, you’ll find inspiration and ideas to help you create your own. I’ll walk through choosing a sewing pattern, picking the right fabrics, and adding design details that make your top feel personal and unique.

One of the best parts of sewing your own peplum tank is the freedom to customize. You can adjust the fit, play with different lengths or shapes of the peplum, and experiment with prints, solids, or textures. Once you’re done, you’ll have a handmade top that is both stylish and versatile, and a true favorite in your wardrobe.

Why You Will Love this Style

A peplum top is such a fun piece to wear. It has a fitted bodice and a little flare at the waist, which creates a pretty, feminine shape. That extra detail gives the top a playful, flirty vibe, making even simple outfits feel more special.

This style is incredibly versatile. Throw it on with jeans or shorts for a casual weekend brunch, or pair it with a skirt or tailored pants for work or dinner out. Lightweight cotton or linen keeps it breezy for summer days, while flowy silky fabrics give a more polished, dressy feel. You can wear it to picnics, beach days, date nights, or even layered under a blazer for cooler weather.

Styling Tips for Your Peplum Tank

A peplum tank is such a versatile piece that can be styled for many occasions.

Pair it with jeans or shorts for a relaxed weekend look, or dress it up with a skirt or tailored pants for work, brunch, or a date night.

The peplum adds volume and movement to your upper body, so it looks best when paired with a narrower bottom silhouette to keep your outfit balanced.

Accessorizing is easy and fun. Add a simple belt at the waist to accentuate the peplum shape, or highlight the neckline with statement earrings or a delicate necklace. Shoes can also set the tone!

Grab sandals or sneakers for casual outings, or heels for an elevated evening look. For cooler days, layer your top under a light cardigan or blazer for a polished ensemble.

It can transition seamlessly from day to night, making it a practical yet stylish addition to your wardrobe. Mix and match fabrics, prints, and trims to create a top that reflects your personal style.

My Sewing Pattern – New Look #6511

This misses’ top pattern includes multiple options with peplums. It has a mini dress, tunic, and also a cropped top without ruffle.

Tops have cut-in sleeveless or cap sleeves and buttons with elastic loop closure at the back neck opening.

I found this New Look pattern a quick sew with minimal pattern pieces and has an average New Look skill level rating.

The style is slightly forgiving, so it does not require an absolutely perfect fit.

I followed the pattern closely, with the exception of removing some of the widths of the peplum (too much gather for me) and top stitched more than it suggested because I was looking for a very professional finish.

If this is your first time making a top, this is a relatively easy pattern to try!

Fabrics For a Peplum Tank Top

When choosing fabric for a peplum top, look for lightweight, breathable options that drape nicely to create a flowy, feminine shape. Avoid fabrics that are too soft or stretchy, like cotton, spandex, or jersey, as they can lie too flat and hide the peplum’s flare.

Consider the style and design of your top. Lightweight cotton, chambray, linen, or shirting fabrics are perfect for casual summer looks. Silk, satin, or chiffon adds a polished, dressy touch for evening wear. Printed fabrics, like florals, polka dots, or stripes, can bring a fun personality to your peplum top, while subtle textures, like seersucker or dobby weave, add visual interest without overwhelming the silhouette.

You can also incorporate trims and embellishments, such as lace, piping, ribbons, sequins, or fringe, to add a unique touch that reflects your personal style.

Before cutting, review your measurements against the pattern’s size chart to determine how much fabric you need. Always check care instructions, and prewash and press your fabric to prevent shrinkage, color bleeding, or distortion after sewing.

With the wide variety of fabrics, prints, and embellishments available, you can create a peplum tank top that is truly one-of-a-kind, flattering, and perfect for your wardrobe, occasions, and comfort.

FAQs

How much fabric do I need for a peplum top?

Typically, you would need around 1 to 1.5 yards of fabric for a basic peplum top without sleeves. If you’re making a peplum top with sleeves, the fabric requirement might increase to about 1.5 to 2 yards.
The fabric required for a peplum top depends on many things, such as the pattern, body measurements, desired fit, and fabric width.
It’s always a good idea to check your pattern instructions or a sewing guide to get precise fabric estimates based on your specific measurements and chosen design.
Also, consider purchasing a little extra fabric for any mistakes or alterations during your sewing project. If you have leftover fabric, you can make a matching scarf for your hat or purse!

How Long Should a Peplum Top Be?

Depending on personal preference and type, peplums typically fall at the hip or slightly below. The ideal length of a peplum top is subjective. It can vary based on body shape, desired style, and current fashion trends. The peplum should be long enough to accentuate the waist and create a flattering silhouette. It should extend only a short distance past the hips to avoid overwhelming the body’s proportions.

What body type can wear peplum?

Peplum tops can be worn by a variety of body types. They are especially flattering for those with an hourglass figure, as the fitted waistline and flared fabric accentuate your curves. This creates balance and a flattering silhouette. Peplums can also work well for pear-shaped bodies by adding volume to the upper body and creating harmony with the hips. These tops help define the waistline and provide an hourglass-like appearance for apple-shaped bodies. For athletic-shaped gals, peplums create the illusion of curves and add some proportions to the figure. Try different styles and find a peplum top that suits your body proportions and accentuates your favorite features.

Peplum tops are an elegant twist to add to your closet. My pattern is a fun twist on the classic tank. I know your finished garment will bring you joy when you wear it, too! These charming styles that mix elegance and playfulness.
