Homemade Crust Ideas and Alternatives

Oh graham cracker crust, how do I love thee, let me count the ways! Here are modifications you can try to make the recipe your own.

Reduce sugar or remove it altogether

Are you using a sweet dessert filling? Do you prefer less sweetness overall? Consider reducing or removing the sugar in the recipe if you don’t want too much sweet flavor in your dessert. Adjust to suit your taste, and it will still be delicious.

Crust Flavors and Ingredient Combinations

Mix it up! Try alternative cracker, cookie or biscuit options to change up the recipe. Test with cinnamon graham crackers or chocolate wafer cookies instead of graham crackers.

Experiment with pre-made cookies such as sugar, chocolate chips, or gingersnaps for fun taste combinations. Reduce the added sugar amount if using sugary cookies or biscuits, to balance the taste.

Combine spices or Mix-ins for your homemade crust

Ground cinnamon, pumpkin pie spice or nutmeg are delicious additions to taste test. Try adding ground nuts, such as pecans or walnuts for crunch.

Mix graham cracker crumbs, and both sugars. Add butter.

Tips for your Homemade Graham Cracker Crust

Here’s a couple of quick fixes if you need troubleshooting help for your graham cracker crust recipe.

Is your pie crust too crumbly or too wet?

If you use different cracker types or measure wrong, your mixture can be a bit off. If your crust consistency is not right, it’s easy to fix.

Too sticky and wet? Just add more graham cracker crumbs. Is your crust too dry and crumbly, then simply add more melted butter. The butter acts like glue to hold crumbs together.

Use a fork to blend ingredients.

Not enough pie crust mixture?

Pans differ in size and if you run short for any reason, this mix is easily adjustable. Of course, you can make a whole new batch to add to it, but you can also just eyeball it.

Add a couple more crackers and one tablespoon of butter at a time, until the consistency is just right.

Press graham cracker mixture into pie or cake pans.

A delicious and easy homemade crust for any size or kind of dessert you can think of!????

10 graham cracker sheets (1 1/2 cups/170g) graham cracker crumbs
1 T granulated sugar
1 T brown sugar
7 T (100g) butter, melted

Crush graham crackers in a food processor or with a kitchen mallet until finely ground into crumbs.

In a large bowl, mix graham cracker crumbs, and both sugars Add melted butter and use a fork to blend ingredients well.

Place mixture into your pie tin, glass pan or ramekin of choice. Use the back of a spoon or the bottom of a glass to press the crumbs firmly into the bottom and sides, (if desired) of your pan. Use your fingers if necessary to perfect the job.

Pre-bake if needed at 375º F (190º C) for 8-10 minutes, keeping a close eye not to burn. If you are making this crust for a different recipe, bake according to that recipe’s instructions. If this is for a no-bake recipe, refrigerate or freeze the crust for 10-20 minutes to set before filling it.

If you do not have brown sugar, use all white sugar in the recipe.
