Instructions
Ready to sew? Below, I’ll walk you through every part of the process. Take your time, and you will end up with a beautifully finished bag in the size and style you want.
Prep Pattern and Attach Zipper

1 Download, print, and cut out the free pattern. Subscribe to get access to pattern library or Sign in if you are already subscribed.
Next cut out your fabric pieces. Cut two of the outer bag fabric, two of the bag lining fabric, two of the interfacing, and the D-ring tab, if using (fabric, leather, or a ribbon).
Iron your interfacing onto the wrong side of the outer bag pieces. If you have a polyester zipper and it’s too long, don’t worry, we will cut it later.
2 To attach the zipper, you will be sandwiching it between the outer fabric and lining fabric. First, lay down one of the outer pieces with the right side of the fabric facing up. On top of that, lay the zipper facing down, with the top zipper pull at the left edge of the fabric. Align the top edge of the fabric with the zipper’s side. Lastly, lay down the lining fabric on top of that, with the right sides together, meaning the right side is down, but the top is aligned with the others. Stitch together using a zipper foot.

3 Press or hand-crease the fabric away from the zipper, and top stitch through all layers on both sides to hold the fabric in place and prevent catching.
4 Repeat the same process for the other side of the bag, making sure the outer fabrics are on the same side of the zipper. Then, topstitch that side, too.
Assemble the Bag

5 Pin or clip the bag together. Place the outer fabrics right sides together, and the lining fabrics right sides together. Fold zipper teeth toward lining (this prevents a pinched zipper edge). Unzip the zipper ¾ of the way. Trim off the extra zipper length if necessary (polyester only). You can also lightly melt the zipper edge with a flame to seal it. If you are adding a tab for a D-ring or swivel hook for extra functionality, add it now. Position it so it gets stitched into the seam, tab pointing inward. Don’t forget to put the D-ring or the clasp on the tab, though!)
6 Mark 1 3/8 inch square in each of the 4 corners.

7 First, make sure the zipper is open so you can easily turn the pouch right side out later.
Cut the squares out of all 4 corners. Then, stitch around the outer edges with a ½″ seam allowance, reinforce at each corner with a backstitch. Leave a 2″ opening on one side of the lining. You’ll use this opening to turn the bag right side out once it’s sewn.
8 To form the gussets, pinch each cut-out corner so the raw edges meet and create a boxed shape. Sew across the edge with a ¼″ seam.
Finish the Pouch

9 Repeat the same steps to sew all four corners.
10 Carefully turn the pouch right side out through the side opening.
Final press and closure. Carefully push out the corners with a pointed tool. Press with steam for a smooth finish. Fold in the raw edges of the opening and close it with topstitching or hand-blind stitching. Lightly shape the pouch by pressing it into the bag. Your pouch is finished!

For a simple and satisfying project, make a classic drawstring bag or try a bag finished with French seams. Both are great ways to build your sewing confidence.
