Looking for simple dinner table setting ideas for a fun night with friends? I hosted my book club this week and wanted to share my simple tabletop and fall menu.
For the table setting, I borrowed these lovely fall-themed plates from one of my besties, Ruth. They were her Grandma’s dishes.
The set is Vintage Franciscan earthenware. Introduced in 1940, the Franciscan Apple theme is a beautiful earthenware pattern. It features hand-painted designs that reflect the beauty of California’s apple orchards.

Party Ideas
When hosting your girlfriends for dinner, consider creative variations that will make the evening unique for your guests.
Any Kind of Group
Mix and match dinnerware to create an eclectic look, or go with elegant, coordinated pieces for a more polished vibe.
Print or handwrite a simple menu for each guest that details the fare of the evening. Display them on small wooden stands or lay them flat beside the plates.
If you’re going for a natural, organic look, place garlands of greenery down the center of the table. Intersperse with fairy lights or tiny flowers for added charm.
Place a tiny party favor wrapped and placed at their seat, like a mini potted plant, candle, or handmade soap.
Seasonal
Embrace the season with a rustic autumn table setting featuring earthy tones, pumpkins, gourds, and cozy plaid table runners.
Add seasonal touches like mini pumpkins or pinecones as place cards. Scatter colorful leaves across the table for a natural vibe.
Use candlelight, lanterns, or string lights to create a cozy glow for a warm and inviting atmosphere.
Book Clubs
Try themed table settings based on your book’s location or era. Pick a seasonal theme with autumn leaves, fresh flowers, or cozy candles for warmth.
For a fun twist, encourage a potluck-style meal where each guest brings a dish inspired by the book you’re discussing.
Personalize the experience with name cards or small take-home gifts that tie into the book or theme of the evening.

Menu Ideas
Plan an evening of comforting, seasonal-inspired menus for your friends. Below are a handful of simple dinner ideas to get you started.
I made everything earlier in the day so I could relax and enjoy the time with my friends.
My Menu
A baked dip and a fall-themed charcuterie board set the stage for appetizers. The main course featured soups served with warm, crusty bread and baked cornbread, plus a fresh salad on the side.
Dessert was warm apple crumble baked in ramekins, topped with vanilla ice cream and a drizzle of salted caramel.
This menu worked beautifully. Most of my friends asked for recipes, which is always a good sign. The mix provided the right balance of variety and quantity, while still being simple enough to prepare in one day.
Appetizer Baked Artichoke Dip and a seasonal Charcuterie Board.
Main Sausage, Kale, and White Bean Soup and White Chicken Chili.
Side Crusty Bread and Baked Cornbread.
Dessert Individual Apple Crumbles.
Drink Apple Cider Martini.
P.S. Actually, I did not make this martini, but next time I will! Yum!

FAQ
Start by placing a dinner plate at each setting, forks on the left, knives and spoons on the right, and glasses above the knives. Add a folded napkin and decorative touches like name cards or small favors for elegance.
I use soft lighting like candles or string lights, add fresh flowers, and play peaceful background music. Arrange cozy seating with pillows, and keep the décor consistent with your table theme for a cohesive feel.
You can use fresh flowers, candles, a decorative bowl filled with seasonal fruits, or a simple garland of greenery for a table centerpiece. You can also incorporate unique items like lanterns, small potted plants, or themed decorations to match the occasion.

Party Tips
Here’s a list of tips and ideas I find helpful when hosting girlfriends.
Plan ahead
I always prep as much as I can the day before—like setting the table, semi-preparing appetizers, or prepping ingredients—so I’m not rushed the day of the dinner.
Keep the menu simple
I try to stick with easy, crowd-pleasing dishes that I can make earlier that day, like soups, casseroles, or slow-cooker meals. This way, I can enjoy the evening with my friends instead of spending too much time in the kitchen.
Create a cozy atmosphere
I love using soft lighting with candles to make the space feel warm and inviting. Adding a little background music also helps set the mood.
Offer a mix of drinks
I always have a variety of drink options, like wine, hard-seltzers, sparkling water, and infused plain water. A signature cocktail or mocktail is always a fun idea, too! This mix of choices makes it fun for your friends and ensures there’s something for everyone to enjoy.
Make it interactive
To get everyone involved, for book clubs, you could create a themed activity based on the book or host a potluck where each guest brings a dish inspired by the story. If your party is not a book club, it’s still fun to add in an activity, theme, potluck, or game.
Set the table in style
I like mixing casual dinnerware with a few decorative touches, like cloth napkins, chargers, a table runner, or fresh flowers. It doesn’t have to be fancy, but it’s nice to make it feel special.
Add personal touches
Whether handwritten place cards or a small gift like a bookmark, adding details that make the evening feel personalized and thoughtful would be so thoughtful and unique.
