Instructions

Follow these simple steps to create your DIY teddy bear clothes.

Prewash and Cut Out Fabric

Wash all fabrics before you begin to avoid shrinkage later. Next, download the free printable pattern from the Bloom library. Subscribe here and I will then email you the log in information.

Print and cut out the pattern pieces. Then cut your fabric pieces using the paper patterns as your guide. Make sure to follow the grain lines for a professional finish. You’ll have vest and skirt front pieces, back pieces, trim, and waistband. (8 total pieces)

Sew the Vest

1 Place the front and back vest pieces right sides together. Pin along the shoulder seams and side seams. Stitch then finish seams with a serger or a pinking shears. Press the shoulder and side seams to the back. Note: I pieced my vest back to use up fabric scraps. If you’d like to do the same, simply sew a back seam up the center back.

Put the vest on your teddy bear, making any little adjustments needed for the best fit.

2 Purchase or make a custom bias tape. For the vest you’ll need a 1.5 inch wide folded and pressed bias strip for trim. Open up bias. With right sides together stitch the bias trim to the vest openings around all edges.

3 To complete fold the bias over the raw fabric edge and tuck under on the other side. Topstitch or edgestitch for a finished look.

4 Your vest is complete! Give it a good pressing. You can add a DIY fabric tie bow, a button with a loop closure, or mock buttons. You can also use Velcro or snaps for easier dressing and removal.

Make the Skirt

5 Finish the fabric edges for the body of your skirt as desired, with a serger or pinking scissors. Note: I pieced the main body of my skirt to use up fabric scraps. If you’d like to do the same, simply sew the smaller parts together.

Purchase or make DIY bias tape. For the skirt you’ll need a 2 inch wide folded and pressed bias strip for the waistband and a 1.5 inch for the skirt trim. Open up the 1.5 inch bias strip, pin one edge of the right side bias to wrong side of skirt body, along the bottom edge and up to the waistline of the center back. Stitch.

Now, open up the 2 inch waistband bias strip. Pin edge of the right side to right side of skirt top edge. Stitch across the top.

6 Fold lower trim to the other side, enclosing the raw fabric edge of skirt body. Pin closed.

Fold over the waistband strip and pin bottom edge to create a casing for the elastic.

7 Topstitch or edgestitch the trim. In the back, tuck the bias trim ends under the folded waistband to hide. Sew along the waistband lower edge, leaving a small opening to insert the elastic.

Thread the elastic through the casing. Try it on and adjust if necessary to fit your stuffed animal. Stitch the ends together securely. Close the opening with your machine or hand stitching.

8 Your skirt is finished. Press. Enjoy your adorable handmade outfit!
